Today in Skagway, I had the luxury of sleeping until 7 am, a welcomed departure from my usual waking time. Kel opted to stay on the ship and catch up on sleep while Tommy and I ventured off the boat for the day. After getting ready, Tommy and I went to the main dining room for breakfast. I savored a nice meal of fruit, scrambled eggs, ham, and hash browns, sticking to my usual breakfast routine to ensure a happy stomach. Perhaps tomorrow, I’ll treat myself to something different, like pancakes. After breakfast, Tommy and I set out on our adventure to the Lower Reid Falls trail, taking a brief detour to visit a gift shop before arriving at the trailhead. The scenic two-and-a-half-mile walk to the waterfall was breathtaking, and the beauty of Skagway and its snow-capped mountains made a lasting impression on me. However, I must admit that Ketchikan still holds the top spot as my favorite Alaskan town.
After taking some photos, we strolled back to the ship, pausing a few times to rest and capture more moments. The weather was pleasant, with an overcast sky but no rain. A gentle breeze made the walk more enjoyable as we started to warm up. By the time we reached the ship, we were both exhausted. Tommy and I headed to our room, changed our shoes, and stowed our backpacks. We then joined Kel at the Grill on the top deck for a leisurely lunch. I indulged in some pizza and my go-to ship beverage, Diet Coke. Unsure of our next activity, we decided to retreat indoors and have cappuccinos at the International Cafe. Afterward, we returned to our room to charge our phones and devices, and I took the opportunity to do some writing.
Tommy is capturing moments of Kel and me in the room as we unwind. As I write, I’m trying to appear natural and at ease. I’ve always felt self-conscious in front of the camera. Finding the right smile is challenging, and I can’t shake the feeling that I come across as awkward and weird.
I just changed into my pajamas, completed my bedtime routine, and now we’re all set for bed. I enjoyed a delicious dinner of rack of lamb and blueberry cobbler for dessert, although the dinner drinks were a bit slow due to the busy evening. At breakfast this morning, a rather grumpy lady seated next to us. It’s astounding how someone could be so miserable, especially in a place where the crew works hard to wait on us and help us.
After dinner, Kel, Tommy, and I went to the Wheelhouse bar for a drink. We each ordered a refreshing watermelon margarita but had one since we were all tired. A chair in our room broke earlier, but the crew promptly replaced it while we were at dinner. Their customer service here is truly exceptional.
Tomorrow, we are at sea. We will be viewing Glacier Bay.
